Started in 1977 as a national arts festival to celebrate the local arts activity of the various communities in Singapore, it has evolved into a major yearly arts event with local, regional and international artistes performing a whole month-long.
There are different categories of arts and performances for everyone: Dance, Music, Theatre, Kidsfest (performances and workshops for kids), Festival Spectacular (the Opening and Closing Celebrations), Outreach (visual arts, street performances, asian showcase, community arts, arts on the move, etc.), etc.
There are even roving performances around shopping malls, MRT stations, hawker centres and parks. Also look out for special performances, like the one in 2008 - the Water Wonder Series where the performance is 'on water' at Boat Quay and Bedok Reservoir.

As there are plenty of performances going on, get hold of the calendar early and plan out as much as you can catch.
