Singapore probably has one of the best public transport system. Most places, especially downtown areas, are well connected by the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), Singapore's passenger train, much like the London Underground or the New York City Subway. Fares range from $0.90 to $1.90. There are 3 main lines - East-West Line, North-South Line and the North-East Line.
Where the MRT doesn't take you, the buses will take you. The fares for non air-conditioned buses, which are rare these days, range from $0.80 to $1.50. The fares for the air-conditioned buses range from $0.90 to $1.80. SMRT also provides a free shuttle service, SMRT Link, on weekends and public holidays from 11 am to 10 pm:
Outram MRT Station to Chinatown
Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station to Chinatown or Little India
You can buy a stored value card (called the ez-link card) at any MRT station or bus interchange for use on both the MRT and the buses instead of buying single-trip cards for the MRT or paying cash on the bus. The fares are also cheaper when using the stored value card. The ez-link card is sold at minimum stored value of $7, a refundable travel deposit of $3 and a non-refundable card deposit of $5. If your child is up to 0.9m in height and accompanied by an adult, your child gets to travel free.
Finally, the fastest and most convenient mode of transport is the taxi. All taxis are metered. Though it is the most expensive mode of public transport, it is quite affordable with a flag-down rate ranging from $2.50 to $2.80 and $0.10 every 175m to 210m depending on distance.

If you transfer between MRT and bus or between buses within 45 minutes; and up to 3 transfers within 2 hours, you will get a discount on the fares.

Do note that there are various surcharges for the taxis such as Booking Charges, Midnight Surcharge, Peak Hour Surcharge, etc. The applicable surcharges will be reflected on the meter.
